Parts and Labour

Reconstructed piano + HD video (26 mins)

I spent four months at a piano workshop, learning to restore a disused piano. The instrument was first taken apart for the old strings to be replaced by new ones. Improvements were then made to various mechanical parts and keys, before the piano was reassembled and tuned to playable condition. Each part of the process was recorded on camera and subsequently edited into a video.

This work was motivated by a desire to hear the sounds inside a piano, and to capture the sounds produced from working on one instead of playing it. It is slow and meticulous with rehabilitation at its core, possibly a reaction to the destruction of musical instruments by some artists in their work.
